The guy seems to want an ur-Mother/Therapist rather than a relationship of equals. It is bound to end in disaster, while he is constantly unloading and she is constantly drained.

It takes real effort to absorb other people's unremitting complaining and negativity, without it finally affecting the recipient.

As for some of the responses to the OP's comments, it does seem to settle along expected lines in so many ways.
