It isn't certain that the Omicron variant of Covid came from South Africa; it just happened to be detected there first. It could have popped up anywhere on the surface of the globe.

Also, Covid is an airborne virus, so it's catchment is far greater than a niche virus like HIV, which means it (HIV), will likely affect far fewer people than Covid would.
